Jacinda Barclay, an AFL women’s player in Australia, passed away last year and donated her brain to the Australian Sports Brain Bank for research. Initial results have shown her cerebral white matter had experienced degradation, possibly leading to mental illness and ultimately her death. A very sad story but with potentially hugely-useful research contributions.
One of my favourite food and culture writers, Alicia Kennedy, wrote about resilience in the Global South, focusing on Puerto Rico post-disaster(s), and asks, is community resilience actually worthy of praise?:
Let’s not center “resilience,” but instead the ways in which the state has failed. Narratives of resilience only serve the powerful and the elite. It’s way past time narrative is wielded to serve the people.

I don’t know how many times I’ve recommended a recipe by Meera Sodha here, but it must be in the tens! Anyway here’s another one that’s delicious: honey, soy, ginger and gochujang tofu. Sticky, spicy, and sweet.
Also, Yotam Ottolenghi’s ricotta meatballs in tomato sauce are phenomenal: surprisingly light and wonderfully savoury.
